We know that 400 GM TDH-5101s were manufactured specifically for New York City’s Board of Transportation.
Today, as far as we know for sure, only one still exists as part of the MTA’s Transit Museum, albeit painted in the original Board colors but with the wrong number and labeled for the wrong operator in honor of the Honeymooner’s Jackie Gleason.
We know that both Triboro Coach (#s 1137-1138) and Green Bus Lines (# 953), in 1968, had these TDH-5101’s.
I was recently advised that 40 of these 5101s were sold to Cuba in 1957-1958. The reason given was that the New York City Transit Authority was making room for the New Looks! If true, that made those buses only 9 years old and still, by bus years, teenagers with still more years of service!
(The gentlemen that provided this information recalls the double-wide front doors of the buses.)
Also, at least one Mack C-50 worked around Guantanamo, Cuba… if not in the town somewhere around the US naval base.
These C-50s probably came from Miami, from the first batch of 20 that were diverted from New York City. Miami got rid of them around 1956-1957.
Can anyone shed some light on the TDH- 5101s and C-50s to Cuba?? |
