You could equate the Kennedy with the R-32 NY subway cars....built to last by the Budd Company in 1964, and still going strong.... Smile

Exactly! Very Happy

Well said! Wink

Recall, when the "KENNEDY" Class boats entered service in 1965, the "Brightliners" were "The New Kids On The Block", subway-wise! (Mom and I went over to GCT to see them when they were on public display in 1964)

When the "KENNEDY" Class ferries arrived, the last of the old two stackers (the "DONGAN HILLS" Class) were retired; sadly, none of those handsome vessels survive today. Sad

For all their modern lines, the "KENNEDY" Class, like the earlier "MERRELL" Class still retained that classic "New York Harbor" look.

With the retirement of the "DONGAN HILLS" boats, those of the "MISS NEW YORK" Class became the oldest in the fleet.

Time flies by much too fast for my tastes; I can still remember all the hoopla and media coverage when the "BARBERI" and the "NEWHOUSE" entered service nearly 40 years ago.

They were truly "State Of The Art" when they entered service, truly revolutionary vessels for the fabled Staten Island Ferry.......... Wink

Back in the day, "As Modern As Tomorrow".

Sadly, a vessel with a somewhat tarnished history.........

Imagine if GREYHOUND, back in the day, offered international service between Florida and Havana, via one of these huge vessels........ Shocked

NYO--
Great stuff!

I actually remember when not only did Greyhound list those ferry connections in their Florida timetables, but actually sold interline tickets on them.
You could have boarded a thru Scenicruiser in New York's Pennsylvania Greyhound Terminal all the way to Key West, and transferred to the ferry to Havana. Cool

traildriver:

Man, imagine going back into time traveling like that, via Hounds and Sea! Wink

I just finished a long put-off project, which entailed re-grouping my vintage toy ocean liners, timetables, brochures, etc.....and the effort was MORE than worth it, I might add! Wink

Some of the old shipping companies represented in my collection (several offered cruises to Havana):

"MIDWAY TRAVEL SERVICE" (This, of course, was a travel agency); this agency included airline service via PAA, NATIONAL, and KLM; steamship cruises and airliners to:

HAVANA

NASSAU

WEST INDIES

HAITI

MEXICO

"Air Cruises" were offered by:

AMERICAN AIRLINES

BOAC

KLM

I also have several brochures from:

CUNARD

GRACE LINE

P&O

AMERICAN EXPORT LINES

AMERICAN PRESIDENT LINES

I also have a mid-50's brochure for sailing on a "HAVANA HOLIDAY", via the P&O's elegant "S.S. FLORIDA".

At the time, the P&O had agencies in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, and Miami.

The photos alone speak eloquently of a long-lost era when traveling by ship was an elegant experience, and, indeed, getting there was half the fun! Wink

How casually travel to Cuba was regarded, back in the day.

Certainly, there were no shortage of fine, luxurious hotels and glittering nightlife in Havana at that time (just ask Ricky Ricardo!) Laughing

NYO--

More great stuff...your collection must need a wharehouse, mine is much more modest... Wink

I did a little research about P&O, and first came up with these two remnant's of the once mighty British P&O line, that are no longer connected with each other...the freighter division was long swallowed up by global giant, Maersk
http://www.poferries.com/en/portal
https://www.pocruises.com/

The latter is just another one of ten cruise lines under the Carnival Corporation umbrella...

Now, back to the American P&O...
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/p_o.shtml
http://www.timetableimages.com/maritime/images/penocc.htm

There was a difference in their names...
the Brit company was Peninsula and Oriental, the Florida company, Peninsula and Occidental...

Great items, as always......thanks for posting here! Wink

Recall "FURNESS LINES"? (offices at 34 Whitehall St.)

In Brian J. Cudhay's excellent softcover "AROUND MANHATTAN ISLAND AND OTHER MARITIME TALES OF NEW YORK", there is a lengthy, well-researched, and lavishly illustrated chapter: "FROM AMBROSE LIGHT TO FIVE FATHOM HOLE: NEW YORK TO BERMUDA BY SEA".

(recall the glory days of the " OCEAN MONARCH" and the "QUEEN OF BERMUDA")

In 1966, my brother and his new wife were to travel to Bermuda on the "QUEEN OF BERMUDA" for their honeymoon; somehow, plans were changed, and they ended up flying down on a PAN AM 707 out of JFK.

In later years, cruise ships of the MAJESTY CRUISE LINES, CELEBRITY, and ROYAL CARRIBBEAN were sailing the high seas to Bermuda.

In the aforementioned chapter, Mr. Cudahy gives us a detailed and interesting account of his round trip voyage between New York and Bermuda aboard the sleek "DREAMWARD"......
