Greyhound 'owned' some Eagle's many years before their purchase of Continental Trailways, and Eagle International...
Remember, they owned a half interest in SKGL--Southern Kansas Greyhound Lines, along with Continental Trailways, which had a fleet of Eagles.
That was indeed a strange operation...IIRC, Upper Management alternated every two years between CGL in Fort Worth, and CTS in Wichita, or something like that... |

Right!
I had forgotten about SKGL LINES!
After TRAILWAYS was absorbed by GREYHOUND, I have to admit I was not all that enamored with "HOUND" paint on the EAGLES.
IMHO, the classic "CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS" scheme that EAGLES originally wore just fit them to a "T".
To be honest, though, it HAS been many a year since I can recall a GREYHOUND scheme that I really liked.....ditto for the buses themselves........

*The newest models, heaven forgive me, look just like giant insects, right down to the extended "feelers"!!
I'll take the classic models, any day....... |

Recalling the "Classic Era" MCI highway coaches; it seems like only just yesterday when what we now regard as "classic" models were the indeed the "new 'hounds in the kennel"!
Other vintage non-GREYHOUND coaches are represented here as well......

That MCI trivia page is interesting...all that talk about Setra's....didn't I read in some link or other, that MCI (Flyer) and Setra (Daimler), were getting "divorced" this year? That MCI would no longer be marketing and supporting Setra in North America?
Besides that...they mentioned that the MC-5 was "the most popular 35 foot coach when it was introduced in 1964"...
Even if you include all iterations's....the A, B, and C models of the MC-5, it still did not come near to the amount of PD-4106's built, even though the 4106 was
built over only a 5 year span, compared to the MC-5's 17 years... |

traildriver;
Yes, that MCI page was quite informative; I learned quite a bit myself!
Prior to the 80's, when MCI's began to be seen more and more in commuter service, most people would think of an MCI as a "highway coach", a "tour bus", or a "charter bus" (I was one of them!)
The past few decades have, IMHO, truly bought MCI into the everyday "spotlight"; people, who had never ridden on long-haul intercity buses before, now had a 'taste" of what riding aboard a "highway coach" was like.
MCI, I truly feel, has never gotten the full accolades it so richly deserves........

Speaking of "Eagles"......
Remember those operated by NJT?
To me, at least, it seemed that NJT did not have them in the fleet for long.
I do remember seeing them too many times to count, back in the day, but, somehow, never got around to riding one.
They truly seemed to vanish in the blink of an eye......

Check out this classic 1980's NJT lineup at the old MEADOWLANDS arena 9now demolished); all three types of buses seen here have long since been retired.
The big MCI, without out a doubt, makes its "highway coach" heritage quite prominent.
I was never a fan of NJT paint (then or now), but I sure miss buses like these......

Further on NJT's early MCI coaches:
"..........New Jersey Transit had 700 MC-9's built for commuter services. The 'Jersey Cruisers' have 49 seats, no lavatory, and 6V92TA engines. An easy spotting feature is the special destination sign built into the body, similar to those on transit buses....."
"......during 1987, NJT took delivery of 415 more MC-9's......"

The Eagle model 20, was a strange bird, for sure...with its NJ unique front and rear end caps, elevated driver's seat (the platform was a step higher than the standard Eagle, making them more like an MC-9 entry...
Note that Suburban Trails also had some also...

WOW!!!!!!!!!
What an assortment of "Joisey" EAGLES!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing this great link!
Some of the NJT EAGLE photos were taken only minutes away from my humble domicile.....areas I knew like the back of my hand!
I certainly miss those SUBURBAN coaches in orange!
I also remember that the NJT EAGLES had a sound that easily distinguished them from the MCI's; I still can hear those engines today.
GREAT pictures, to be sure....thanks again!

Getting back to GREYHOUND........
In discussing the MCI coaches, it is no stretch of the imagination wondering why GREYHOUND has had MCI buses in the fleet for the past several decades.
I think that, whether in intercity or commuter service, these buses have more than proven their worth; I am sure many charter and tour bus companies would agree!
I took several vacation trips on DOMENICO MCI's, back in the early 90's; those big bruisers gave a good smooth ride and obviously were good performers in many types of highway situations.......

In speaking of "highway coaches" (MCI, EAGLE, etc.) I feel we should make at least a brief nod to those coaches customized for celebrity travel.
I have several die cast EAGLE "celebrity tour buses" in my collection; I know these have long since been out of production.
See.......
