All:

As we are now drifting more and more into discussing articulated buses (ain't nothing wrong with that!) it set me to wondering about articulateds in the MTA fleet, through the years.

A few questions:

When the did the MTA first start taking delivery of articulateds? (I remember NJT began taking delivery of the VOLVO units between 1988 and 1989, if memory serves me correctly; these buses were replaced with NEOPLAN artics about 15 years ago)

The now-retired NJT Volvos had the distinction of being the first articulated buses in the area, and were, in fact, the only articulates in the greater New York area for years

How many articulates are now in the MTA fleet (which are the oldest still in service and which the newest?)

I would guess that these big buses more than pull their weights on the heaviest routes (also, do they run in all five boroughs?)

How do drivers (on average) rate them?

Thanks in advance for any and all input........Wink

NJT, come to think of it, was a true "pioneer" when it came to introducing articulated buses to the Greater New York/New Jersey Metro area.

Personally, I was never a big fan of the old VOLVO's; they were notoriously underpowered when climbing any fairly steep grade (such as the Gorge Road hill up from River Road in Edgewater, when working the #159)

The rear sections tended to swing and slide back and forth on slippery, icy pavements, which I was never comfortable with, especially when I was seated in the rear.

I find today's NEOPLAN artics (which replaced the VOLVO's about 15 years ag) to be much better buses, at least from a passenger's standpoint.

It would have been interesting to see what types of artics the MTA might have purchased, had they purchased them at the time NJT was taking delivery.......

In thinking back, I seem to recall articulated "demos" on MTA routes, many years back.

The one I particularly remember was a painted a cream(?) and red, but am not totally sure.........

The New Flyer D60HF are being retired as the new Nova LFSA and New Flyer XD60 and XN60 take the streets.
