All:

I well remember growing up with buses equipped with the "unique to New Jersey" crowd gates.

I know these were once mandatory on NJ buses and, in decades past, were common equipment.

Then, one day, I could see that these chrome gates were vanishing, being removed, and not being replaced.

My question:

When were crowd gates no longer required on NJ buses? (does anyone know when they began to be used? I am guessing post WW2.)

Back in the early 80's, I vividly remember a male passenger who had just boarded my #181 (old TNJ/PS #21) and was catapulted towards the windshield, when a wrong-way driver swerved sharply, and causing our driver to slam on his brakes.

This daily passenger (who was in a neck brace the next time he boarded several days later) was saved by that gate being there; he would have surely went through the windshield otherwise.

Appreciate any input on these once-commonplace gates aboard NJ buses......

Mr. Linsky answered my inquiry on this board when I once asked the same question about the gates. A word search should work, but sometimes the threads are so long that you tire of scanning the thread that is said to contain the answer. Good luck!

Those plastic driver security shields that Greyhound installed on their buses, kind of reminds me of them...while manually operated, they perform similar functions...block the aisle when underway, and block the driver's seat when passenger's are passing thru....

Guys:

Appreciate your input......thank you! Wink

I still wonder what exactly it was that caused the "crowd gates" to disappear; I'm guessing that a decades-old ordinance that required the gates was simply allowed to quietly expire?

Back in the early and mid-60's (when I was MUCH younger!), I still recall how odd it was to board an NYCTA Old Look or a MACK at the St. George terminal, and not seeing gates.......being a "Joisey Boy", I just naturally assumed ALL buses had them....... Rolling Eyes

New Jersey had another difference from all other states...they were the only state that required emergency doors on the PD-4106....when the 4107 came out, they finally lifted that requirement, and the window exits satisfied them...

traildriver:

Appreciate you jogging my memory; hadn't recalled this in ages!

I still have great memories recalling PSNJ 4104's and 4106's, heading to the Shore, back in the day, via Journal Square (the old Sip Avenue terminal), back in the 1960's............

Here are two views of Public Service Coordinated buses showing the "crowd gates"

Photo 1... GMC TDH 3207, number A103 showing the gate open. Along with a Johnson model "J" fare box. As well as the bulkhead mounted Ohmer fare register. The black box directly behind the fare box and the gate is hard to determine what it is.

Photo 2... Mack C-49 (demo), number M24 showing the gate in the closed position, minus all the fare collection equipment.

(this photo was for sale on EBay awhile back. Borrowed for educational purposes)

VERY nostalgic photos....sure bring back many great old memories! Very Happy

These photos obviously predate the nulky (and memorable) NCR registers, that I can recall on PS buses back in the 60's.

I also remember the NCR registers on other Jersey carriers, such as ORANGE & BLACK, MANHATTAN LINES, DE CAMP, etc.

I purchased one many years ago ($50!) and am I glad I did!

Appreciate you sharing these great old PS views.......... Very Happy

Great shot!
But I'm not looking at the register...rather, how well do I remember those old Sangamo Tachograph's, with the wax paper charts we had to put in for our runs....very nostalgic! Thanks for posting...

Never a transit driver, but rather a rider who enjoyed a seat up front, I well recall those speed recorders. I am fairly certain that the registers were used on New England Transportation and on the Liberty Bell Limited interurban.

LOVE THE NOSTALGIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy Wink

I purchased my NCR register via the old NJT store (Newark); I ordered it online (at least 17 years ago) and, man, was it worth EVERY PENNY!!!!!!!!! Very Happy

Back in the day, I never even thought that, one day, these commonplace registers, like the crowd gates themselves, would be relegated to history.......

We had the 'tachs' on our PD-4104 and PD-4106 coaches....besides putting in the charts, you also had to wind up the clock, and set the time, if necessary. And submit the charts along with the trip report, and log sheet at the end of the day....

When the Eagle's came, they had German Kienzle tach's that were electrically wound.

If I had my way I'd get rid of all of them tachographs.
