NYCT was a very good RTS customer, purchasing 4490 units from 3 manufacturers during the period 1981-1999.
Over this period, the RTS-04 evolved into the RTS-06, and NYCT's RTS fleet underwent numerous changes.
I don't know the answers to the following questions, but I suspect that some of you BT3 members might:
1.) When did the so-called "porkchop panels" disappear?
2.) When did transmission retarders become standard issue?
3.) When did rooftop exhausts become standard?
4.) Which RTS's only had the left-hand switch panel in the B/O's compartment (as opposed to the LH and RH switch panels)?
5.) Which RTS's had low-mounted curbside destination signs?
6.) Which RTS's had rear route signs?
7.) Which RTS's had soft seats?
8.) When did DD50 engines become standard?
9.) Which RTS's had ZF trannies?
10.) Which RTS's had Cummins engines?
11.) Which RTS's had Alcoa wheels?
12.) What variations in front dest. signs were there? Luminator? Luminator MAX? Luminator MegaMax?
13.) What different kinds of WCL's were installed in RTS's?
14.) Which RTS's had air starters?
15.) Which RTS's had air-ride B/O seats, and which brand of seats?
Thanks!!! |

I'll try, though I could be wrong on some of these:
1) 1994 TMCs, which came in with the Series 50 already installed (as opposed to previous units which were repowered from a 6V-92TA, I guess porkchop window corresponds to original engine being a two-stroke).
2) 1994 TMCs
3) 1994 TMCs, also with the Series 50, this went to repowers as well. I think this also corresponds with a four-stroke engine.
4) All keypad RTSs?
5) All RTSs up until 1997 (in other words no 9xxx or 49xx-5xxx's have this)
6) All after 1982 or 1983
7) In reference to suburbans, 1996 buses had them. Also a few 3xxx's. In reference to the cloth seat covers placed on hard seats, those were on 1999 (49xx-5xxx's) only.
8) 1994 TMCs
9) Some 49xx-5xxx's
10) Some 8xxx's that currently live in Brooklyn
14) All except the 1999 buses. I think the air starter and electric starter are distinguishable by sound. |

Bob,
I'll take an educated guess on question 15 regarding the driver's seat.
If all of the subsequent RTS manufacturers followed GM's long time practice, then the seats would have been made by Haywood-Wakefield.

I'll add in where the others left off.
5. One '90 TMC RTS at QV (I think it was 8381) had this low sign first before they started getting them on some of the later local buses.
6. The rear route sign started with the '83 buses (3000-PA3325)
7. Several groups included soft-seaters.
1981 - 1298-1317
1982 - PA1734-PA1858
1983 - None
1984 - None
1985 - 3800-3899
1986 - None
1987 - 4873-4888 added later
1990 - None
1993 (Orion V) 101-172
1994 - None
1995 - (Orion V) 611-630
1996 - 9250-9349
10 - Fresh Pond's 9140-9149 came with the Cummins M11E
11 - All NYCTA buses from '94 through '96. |

Actually, I remmeber TMC RTS-06 #8381 had it's side destination sign like a Orion 05.501 #400s series from Bee-Line. It had yellow with black lettering on it. THAT bus was an odditie just for that reason.
Oh and GMC RTS-04 #3965, #3967-3968, #4167-4168 and #4191 had soft seats installed before they were scrapped. I remember that as I was TOTALLY shocked when I saw them running on express routes from Ulmer Park and Yukon. |

Thanks for your replies!
Looking through some RTS literature, I noticed that NYCT's 1994 TMC RTS-06's had Webasto engine heaters installed when delivered, as a switch for this equipment was provided on the RH switch panel in the B/O's compartment. NYCT's 1998 Nova RTS-06's (9350-9699) apparently did not have this equipment, because no switch was provided on the LH switch panel.
Observing NYCT RTS's operating in Midtown, it looks as if RTS's with fleet numbers <9250 have both LH and RH switch panels in the B/O's compartment.
I think that NYCT 9350-9699 and 4900-5249 had LH panels only.
I'm not sure about what panel arrangement is used on NYCT 9250-9349. |
