NYO: It's been a proven fact with almost anything that when you make improvements internally without touching the essential external components, your going to obtain longevity.
You're case in point is well taken. Both the old looks and new looks are indeed the best buses built for both performance, endurance and longevity.
This is another reason the VW Beetle lasted as long as it did. Same body shape from beginning to end, but almost nothing in common elsewhere.

Agreed 100%!
Recall, also, that the Old Looks and New Looks were designed with the RIDING PUBLIC in mind; also, they were designed at a time where calipers and slide rules were being used to design buses (and other vehicles), with no electronic/computerized aid whatsoever.
The Old Looks and the New Looks were both sturdy, well-constructed, no-nonsense transit vehicles, and, it is indeed small wonder that these rugged coaches lasted as long as they did (both in production and in regular service)
GMC was indeed the undisputed KING in the bus-building industry, back in the day.........

Sidenote:
New Looks were quite popular with Japanese toy makers back in the 60's (both tin and plastic)....I can certainly attest to that!
Rarest (and most pricey!) are two LARGE tin litho New looks in 5th AVENUE COACH and D.C. TRANSIT liveries......I have seen these two stunning toy buses on eBay once or twice and they are ASTRONOMICAL in price (!!)
Would I love to see either (or both) in mu collection today......ahhh, perchance to dream..........

I managed to swing by the Academy facility at Secaucus, and took a couple of photo's, of the blue and white bus, that said "ilgrian church" on its side...the bus was parked close between two other buses, so I could not get very good shots of it, but did get a couple. The bus was in only fair shape, cosmetically, with rust showing...I did not have the time to inquire about it with anyone, as I was in a rush to bring a bus back to The Port...
I have the pictures on my i phone, and do not know how to post them here, but if you give me your email address, I will be happy to send them to you to post here, if able.... |

I just took another look at the photo, and was surprised to see that the side windows were modified, to eliminate the 'slant'...they look more like the ones on the Classic....
If anyone wants to see them, send me your email...
or explain how I can get them from my phone to this site.... |

traildriver:
Somewhere on the board, I had a thread ages ago about "square window New Looks"; I recall one that operated on the old NHBL #1 line (JSQ-Nungessers) back in the 90's.
This was clearly a "remodeled" bus and QUITE interesting! (never got around to taking any pictures, though!)
At least I DID ride it, several times!
This is now going back at least 20 or more years, now........ .....

I DID receive the photos.......and THANK YOU!!!
(Sadly, I cannot post them here, as I am QUITE computer illiterate, and have not the slightest idea on how to post them here)
Seems all the classic old workhorse needs is some TLC.......too bad modern buses cannot have that same sleek and timeless design!
It would be interesting indeed to learn about this classic bus and its "ancestry".......
THANKS AGAIN!

You are quite welcome, NYO, I am somewhat computer illiterate, as well..
If you zoom in, you can see a lot of corrosion, so not sure how sound the coach is...
And yes, I agree with your assessment of modern vs classic vehicle design...
where are Raymond Loewy, Harley Earl, Bill Mitchell, and the other vehicle designers from 'the greatest generation', when we need them? |

traildriver:
These days, both here and abroad, modern buses (and light rail units) are looking more and more like shoe boxes and/or giant mutated caterpillars/eels than buses.
Today, where the type remains in service, the RTS is now a "classic" in its own right, recalling a design that now goes back nearly 40 years.
The "New Look" in the 2000's, I guess!
In my younger days, I never thought there could ever be a more modern bus than the New Look.....ahhhhh, youth's innocence.........
