All:
Recently purchased a vintage postcard (judging by the autos in the view, which would date the postcard to about 1962/1963); this postcard shows a panoramic view depicting the St. George terminal, obviously during a rush hour.
There are over a dozen buses in this view, all Old Looks and MACKS (also, long vehicle lines waiting to board the boats to Manhattan and 69th St., Brooklyn)
This was a scene yours truly knew very well, back in his much younger years.
My questions:
When did New looks begin arriving on Staten Island routes?
When were the last MACKS on Staten Island retired?
When were the last SI Old Looks replaced?
I personally can remember SI MACKS as late as about 1967/1968, and Old Looks until 1970 or thereabouts.
Appreciate any input.......thank you.....

Your memory matches mine, but I know mine can be inexact. For the eight years I lived on Staten Island until July, 1967, the island-only routes were totally Macks, though perhaps with two models. If memory is correct, a single Verrazano route began when the bridge opened in November, 1964. It went from Bay Ridge to Port Richmond. It had GM New Looks based in Brooklyn, but it may have had a R-route designation. Coming from Brooklyn, I would transfer to the R-102 at Broadway and Cary Avenue to reach home in New Brighton. The ferry from Manhattan was quicker than using the Fourth Avenue BMT and two buses, but the bridge route was adventuresome. The height of the bus allowed me to look over the bridge railing, an obstructed view from a sedan.

I used picture postcards of Staten Island quite a bit. A chart on the internet says the postcard postage rose to 3 cents in 1959 and 4 cents in 1963.

With his books, Brian Cudahy has certainly helped devotees of New York transportation history. In this photo, the buildings behind the Macks have caught my interest. I presume they line Whitehall Street, and they were demolished in the past 60 years. The sloped roof intrigues me, as that design can still be found on buildings in lower Manhattan. One place dated the design from the 1830's. It is my claim that the streets that carried el structures in the past even now have some of the oldest buildings, because investors were not tempted to build next to a noisy el. No fancy clothing store is there. The building says "Leonard Roberts Uniforms." The 1945 alphabetical telephone directory shows Leonard's Mens Shop at 45 Whitehall Street, just north of where the Second Avenue el turned northeast on Front Street. Mr. Cudahy has long been highly esteemed by yours truly as a great transit writer (I have several Cudahy books in my transit library)
I well recall those old buildings you mentioned in that 1955 photo; back in the 60's, I still remember there being bars/grills/etc. located there, which were easily viewed through the big Terminal windows, while ascending up to the upper deck boat level via the escalators.
Getting back to the MACKS and Old Looks on Staten Island, I remember both MACKS and Old Look GM's through the late 60's; I believe the MACKS were retired about 1967/1968, with the Old Looks lasting a bit longer.........

The City retired the last Mack C-49s and the GM TDH 5106s in 1971. |
