A slew of renumberings of up to 20 routes along Manhattan and the Bronx and within Queens take effect after decades of route numbering duplications and, in some cases, triplications. The New York City Transit Authority's Manhattan bus division is, in terms of simple ratio, the most affected by the changes, with only one route - M15 First and Second Avenues - retaining its original number; the other four they operated weren't so lucky (with old route numbers in italic and new route numbers in bold face):
- M1 - Madison and Chambers Streets Crosstown - to M22
- M3 - 49th and 50th Streets Crosstown - to M27
- M7 - 65th Street Crosstown - to M29
- M11 - York Avenue - to M31
As MaBSTOA had more routes in the area, the ratio wasn't as severe, but even they didn't escape unscathed:
- M6 - 72nd Street Crosstown - to M30
- M15 - 23rd Street Crosstown - to M26
- QM15 - Fifth and Madison Avenues / Jackson Heights - to M32
- QM16 - Elmhurst Crosstown - to Q89
- M20 - 57th Street Crosstown - to M28
The TB route along the Triborough Bridge was split into three different routes (two in Manhattan, one in The Bronx):
- M34 - Manhattan - Wards and Randalls Islands
- M35 - Manhattan - Astoria
- Bx21 - Bronx - Astoria
Two routes in Manhattan with alpha suffices, one created to avoid confusion with another route which became a different route with an alpha suffix due to its being a "new" (read: resurrected) branch of another route on another set of avenues, also got transformed:
- M2A - Fifth, Madison and Seventh Avenues - to M2
- M101A - Third, Lexington and Lenox Avenues - to M102
In the Bronx, six routes, all with alpha suffices, were changed to eliminate same:
- Bx4A - Webster Avenue - to Bx16
- Bx5A - Story Avenue and Parkchester - to Bx54
- Bx12A & B - Orchard Beach - to Bx12
- Bx15A - Gun Hill Road and Hillside Homes - to Bx6
- Bx15B - Baychester Avenue - to Bx19
- Bx15C - Merton Avenue and Co-op City - to Bx17

As if all this weren't enough, the M107 - 106th Street Crosstown is discontinued, and the easternmost part of its route (to 106th Street and FDR Drive) becomes an alternate branch of the M19 - 96th Street Crosstown.
