Not a radio station ad here, but, this placard WNEW TV special broadcast ad is worthy to include posting here, especially in its historical context (Jamaica Ave. & Queens Blvd, 1977)

And yet . . . not a single placard for 1010 WINS. Hmmm . . . |

I know...that IS strange, considering what a "hot" all-news station 1010 wins is!
I HAVE seen a pic somewhere on line, showing a Baltimore & Ohio train connection bus, taken in Manhattan (about 1958) with the 1010 WINS studio in smack-dab the background; that was way back when the station had not switched to all-news.......

Probably WBAI's advertising budget for the entire year. |

Especially in 1978 where, everywhere else you turned, you saw ads blaring "New York WINS." You'd think at least one of their buses would've had that at least on the front . . . |

Now that I recall, when I started working in lower Manhattan in 1979, there were also "1010 WINS" ad cars inside PATH cars.
I even recall seeing ads on NJ buses, back in those days......

GREAT pics!!!!!!!!!!!
Back in the early and mid-70's, I remember "WVNJ" (WV-ENJOY"!) ads inside TNJ buses, as well as outside.
As I had mentioned earlier, this was a very popular "easy listening" station (Newark); my parents and I always enjoyed listening to their great selections!
Going back to "77 WABC", IMHO, I truly believe that it was the most iconic "pop" station in the greater New York area, especially during the late 60's/early-mid 70's.........just their trademark jingle along was classic!
As I had mentioned previously, I still recall "1010 WINS" ad cards inside PATH cars back then.........

Back in the early/mid 80's, I also remember seeing a lot of "KISS" (FM) placards on MTA buses.......

Two things about this:
- The side roll sign indicating "2 MADISON AVE VIA 116 ST." Obviously unchanged since that bus was first put into service in 1965.
- The large blank space at right on the front roll sign - to cover "VIA 7 AVE." No doubt the short-lived Fifth-Madison-Lenox 2 would have said on SB routes, "2 TO 8 ST VIA LENOX." |

Great historical info; I find this sort of "Noo Yawk" historic bus "trivia" quite interesting!
Roll signs....man, how commonplace they once were, on both the buses and the subways.......today, they are all highly-prized collector's items.....where have the years gotten to
Personally, I never thought that the day would come when roller signs would be relegated to memory and museums.......

And when I moved 'out west' in the early '70's, I would periodically 'come home' for holiday or vacation visits (by bus), I would turn on my transistor radio, and would begin picking up its powerful clear channel, 50,000 watt signal, somewhere in Indiana during the night, and 'the beacon' would guide me home....just hearing its famousl jingle would make me feel that I was already there....very nostalgic....

traildriver:
Going through this old thread I started ages ago just jogged my memory again, regarding both buses and WABC, long, long ago......
It was New Years' Eve, 1968, and my folks and I were riding out from Journal Square to West Orange aboard a #22 DE CAMP New Look suburban, going out to spend New Years' with my Aunt Louise, Uncle Karl, and all the cousins who then lived in West Orange, on Wakeman St. (we got off the #22 in Verona, where my uncle then picked us up in his blue '66 JEEP Wagoneer!)
Before the rest of the company arrived, we then all happily (and NOISILY!) exchanged our belated Christmas gifts (my two older twin cousins, John and Joe (the SUPER cool "Dynamic Duo" of West Orange!!) gave me big cast-metal SILVERSIDES that they had found in a second-hand store while on vacation that summer...I was QUITE happy, to say the least!
Then my aunt and uncle (bless them both!) gave me my first transistor radio (a "LIFE TONE DE LUXE")....JACKPOT!! btw: I STILL have that radio; one of these days, I have to see if it still plays!
Long after midnight, when the rest of the merrymakers had gone home to sleep through the wee hours of 1969, my folks and I bedded down in the guest room; of course, I had my new transistor radio softly playing under my pillow......I'll give you just one guess as to what station I had it tuned in to........
No wonder I STILL associate WABC with buses past........

This is nne of my favorite New Look/WABC poster photos; you can actually HEAR the nostalgia with this one.....being aboard Fishbowl somewhere in the city, your trusty transistor radio glued to your ear.......
"SEVENTY-SEEEVEEEN! DOUBLEYOUUUUUU AAAAYYYBEEEESEEEEEEE!"
Man, we sure had it all, way back then.....great music radio AND great buses.......we were indeed spoiled ROTTEN.......
