More strap trivia...

Do you recall when they changed the design of the straps that came from the R-10's thru the R-22's, with the new R-26's in 1959?

The older style looked more elaborate, with a shroud covering the top portion about half way down to the curved open handle, while the newer design was more a simple open rounded triangle design. It is the latter type in my collection...

By the way, the straps on the Orion buses are just like miniatures of the one in my collection... Cool

Here are pictures showing various postwar straps through the years (A bit o' trivia: the last new New York City subway cars to have straps were the R-42's)

Looks like I was off by one model...the photo of the R-22 shows that it was the one that introduced the newer style strap, not the R-26...

And that R-11 was retrofitted...it originally had no straps, just the rails to hang on to...

Correct; recall, the R-11's were rebuilt as "R-34's" in 1964......

Straphangers, where are the straps? I think both Interborough and BMT el cars had leather straps, and somewhere recently I have seen plastic straps inside a new transit bus. However, what has been described here are retractable handles of various styles.
---
The handle with a spring was introduced at some point when a patent was issued and transit companies began the use of them, to the delight of the patentee. I don't know when that happened, maybe about 1910.
---
Post-WW2, the retractable handles in New York subway cars have gone through various designs, as shown in the photos you have referenced. Being short of stature, however, I favor grab bars and poles within ordinary reach. One of my complaints in other threads is about longitudinal seats and the space wasted by the scarcity of poles down the middle of the car. Some other systems use vertical poles that split into parallel bars.

N4:

Good input! Wink

Some early cars that did not have straps (either leather or metal) were some BMT Standards (some DID have metal straps) and the home-built BMT "C" units.

The 1925 BMT "Triplex" cars also did not have straps; neither did the BMT's "Multi Section" units, which entered service in 1936.

Leather straps were "de riguer" on El equipment, with the early IRT "Composites" being the exception; they had subway-style metal straps during the years they worked on the Els.

The last cars with leather straps were the "Q" cars which closed out Myrtle Avenue El servive in 1969.........

I have seen a handful of R-160 cars that have vertical poles that do split into parallel poles at 'grab' height. IIRC, these are the same cars that also were fiitted with fold down seats in the 'handicap area' at the cab ends, although those have seem to be removed at some time...

How did NYO find those interior shots of new subway cars? Photos of interiors are so rare on nycsubway.org , I was about to ask the younger members of our hobby to take interior photos and post them somewhere so the interior "furniture" can be documented after the cars are scrapped.
