What exactly were those "Identra hoops" you mentioned...
Some kind of early RFI device?
I do recall seeing them on those 7 Line cars, but never knew just what they were for.... |

See:

("INDENTRA" use began on the #7 in 1957)

Many thanks, NYO for those links...clears up the 'mystery' of those distinctive loops, unique to the Flushing Line, at least in NYC... |

You are quite welcome.....my pleasure!
It is interesting indeed that only the #7 used "INDENTRA" hoops; perhaps it might have been an experiment that might have, eventually, been installed on the IRT "main lines".
Being that the #7 was (and still is) almost totally isolated in its connections to the "main line" IRT routes, perhaps the #7 line was a "test bed", so to speak, to see whether or not the "INDENTRA" system would work on the IRT "main lines".....just a guess, here........

A classic "Bluebirds" photo at Corona; going by the vintage autos in the picture, this would appear to be the late 1960's.
An "INDENTRA" hoop can just BARELY be seen on the lead car, closest to the camera......

One thing that I loved about those R-14 and R-15's were the single seats behind each cab. In later design's, the doors were offset on each side of the car, and resulted in double seats at those location's... |

I WELL recall those single seats!
Back in the 60's, Mom and I rode those cars on the old BG shuttle, when they had replaced the veteran Lo-V's (1964)
I commuted on them many times on the 7th Avenue expresses back in the early 80's; I used to inwardly smile, thinking that these ancient cars pre-dated both "I LOVE LUCY" and "THE HONEYMOONERS"!
The Brooklyn Dodgers (Duke Snyder, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, et al) still called Brooklyn home, when these now-historic cars made their debut in the late 1940's.....and trolleys were still operating over the Brooklyn Bridge.......a long, long, time ago......

Yes, I well recall those small straphangers/ hand grabs during the early 80's; the R-15's also were re-equipped with them, to my recollection.
Interestingly, the R-12's were the only IRT cars delivered new WITHOUT the traditional straphangers; not surprisingly, all new IRT SMEE cars (starting with the R-17's, through to the R-33/36) were equipped with straps........
