With DaimlerChrysler looking to unload Chrysler Group, has anyone heard what this would mean for DaimlerChrysler Commercial Buses North America? Would it stay under the Daimler umbrella, would all of it or just Orion be spun off with Chrysler, or would DCCBNA be sold off as a separate unit? Thoughts?

The sale of Chrysler would have no effect on Orion. Orion was purchased by Western Star Trucks, then Freightliner bought Western Star and Orion came as part of the package. Freightliner was owned by Daimler-Benz before the Chrysler acquisition. Daimler is very dedicated to commercial vehicles, and they have no plans to shed DCCBNA.

I recall reading an article which indicated that only the Chrysler car group is up for sale and that Daimler would continue to own and operate the commercial vehicles group in North America. I've searched on Google for this but haven't yet found it.

From something I heard a while back -- Daimler owns Detroit Diesel / Allison Transmissions. Daimler is doing there best to replace all Detroit Diesel engines with Benz designed engines. With the fact that Caterpillar has come out with a engine for buses and are working on an automatic transmission, I think there might be trouble ahead for Daimler.
If any of this information is wrong PLEASE correct me.

On the medium & heavy truck side, M-B engines definitely are showing up significantly in Daimler brands such as Sterling and Freightliner (I'm not sure about the popularity of M-B engines in Western Stars; that brand caters to a very traditional trucker, much like Peterbilt & KW). At first, M-B diesels were seen more in the medium-duty trucks, but even larger rigs (e.g. FL Columbia) seem to have them now as well. Cats are very popular in trucks of all sizes and makes. Cummins and Cat both are pushing hard for bus engine sales. IN the transmission market, Allison has a lot of competition from ZF on the OTR coach side (ZF just recently delivered its 11,000th bus tranny in the US).

It's official - Orion and the other DaimlerChrsler bus manufacturing operations will not be affected by the sale of Chrysler to Cerberus Capital Management. The statement from DaimlerChrysler specifically states:

Quote:
The leadership teams of the Mercedes Car Group, the Truck Group and Financial Services will remain unchanged, as will the teams in the vans and buses businesses.

Interestingly, Chrysler's new owner-to-be Cerberus Capital Management is already the owner of NABI.

I'm no 'seer' but on the light vehicle end of the Chrysler business emphasis will be placed on further development of both the 'Jeep' and 'Dodge' lines playing on their very successful pasts.

However, despite some initial audience appeal for the Chrysler 'PT' and '300' models (which are now both in decline) I believe these marques and anything else labelled Chrysler will disappear shortly!

These new buyers are 'turnaround' specialists and have been extremely successful at the resurrection of near dead entities! - let's see what they can do for Chrysler.

[b]DaimlerChrysler Commercial Buses North America Announces Name Change

Mass Transit

As a result of the recent sale of the Chrysler Group and given the corporate name change to Daimler AG, Dr. Andreas Strecker announced today the upcoming corporate name change to Daimler Buses North America, effective January 14, 2008.
The new name will not change the organization’s continued role as stewards of our highly regarded bus brands of Orion, Setra and Sprinter in the US and Canadian markets. “While our name is being refined, our product strategy and business model will remain unchanged,” said Dr. Andreas Strecker, president and CEO of Daimler Buses North America. “Our operations, structure and brand strategies remain the same, and we look forward to serving the market with the strength of the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer behind us.”

Daimler Buses North America continues to combine three trusted commercial bus brands under one corporate structure: Orion transit buses, Setra motorcoaches and the Dodge Sprinter shuttle buses.
