It is the same bus you saw (8602), but it's not the Phoenix. That one is 1986 RTS #4396.

How's this for something different? The bus shown here is ex-Garfield Heights Coach Line 1966 model TDH-5303 #5566 now Cleveland's RTA #5566.
This is the results when you mate a front bumper from a RTS to a Fishbowl. Not the prettiest sight to behold, but very functional. I'm not too sure what exact function the Mobile Repair Unit plays, but my guess is that it's an out in the field vehicle used to service other buses in distress. The larger RTS bumper was probably installed for heavy duty pushing when needed.
Note the set of battery cables clamped to the front of the bus.
Photo credit as noted on the photo.

Well, it sure is unusual. I wonder if it just came out of the paint shop? I notice that the windows are unlatched.

Altoona's (AMTRAN) strange buses: Here we see bus 162 (161 at the bottom), one of 9 buses (155-163) acquired from Montgomery in 2001 and used exclusively for school service. Both these buses are 1974 T6H-4523A models originally #7439 & #7440 in Montgomery's fleet.
These buses came already modified with amidship wheelchair lifts. How they worked is anybody's guess, but I doubt that these were put into general use aside from school duty.
AMTRAN installed flashing lights both front and rear and swing out stop signs. While they do not follow the regular service routes, they do carry fare boxes and anyone can ride them. The "Public Bus" on the front and rear of the buses alert potential riders of the service.

Interesting to note that the Mobile Repair Unit itself has been repaired with duct tape. Have to wonder if that's also what's holding the bumper on .

Isn't duct tape wonderful? As far as the bumper is concerned, I'm sure shop-made brackets were used to hold it on - not to discount the fact that duct tape would probably have worked better. LOL
