For as long as I can remember I have seen those GM fishbowl buses whenever they'd be parked somewhere they'd have them all right up to the bumpers and I wondered if a bus had to pull out if he could do it. I know the they can turn but could they get out without touching the other bus?

Normally if parked in a line, they pull back out in that order. If you back and forth about 3 times with about a foot, you should be able to get out.

Reminds me of this school bus yard over by the Brooklyn Ikea.

Most buses can steer at a very sharp angle. So they can get out of a fairly tight spot so long as there is sufficient room for them to swing wide...

One foot? That isn't much room.

Even one foot of clearance, bumper-to-bumper, can be sufficient to "saw" back and forth, moving perhaps inches at a time sideways, until there is enough room to swing out. It is not easy, but it can be done.

Now doing it without the aid of power steering....that is a whole 'nother matter.... Wink

Traildriver got that right. When I drove in Reading, PA in the mid-sixties the average year of our buses was 1947. No power steering, no air ride. I've worked them out of a space with about a foot of open room. It can be done but you were out of breath till you got it out! Seemed like you turned the steering wheel like 30 turns lock to lock.

How were the Fishbowl buses compared to the rest? I understand that they had a very low gear ratio so that you could turn it without power steering.

I cannot help you there...I only drove a couple of them (Suburban model's), a couple of times, and those did have power steering. I mostly drove parlor types....4104, 4106, 4107, 4903, etc.....

I drove a couple of 4517's. They didn't have power steering but were much easier to steer than the old looks. Probably because of the lighter weight.
