An opinion piece;

Unless you’ve been in a coma in the last couple of days, you know that the Midwest is experiencing ice storms the likes of which have seldom been recorded before.

A swath of land the size of the state of California stretching from St. Louis northeast toward Chicago has been inundated with hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions of people now without electricity which could be the case for weeks until all repairs are finally made.

To compound the felony so to speak, this storm is in the process of moving eastward and another is expected to follow shortly.

The question is; what makes this event so much more devastating then the many natural disasters that this country faces each year?

Global warming could be the answer! Now, I’m no meteorologist and I understand very little about the mechanics of weather in general but computer models, which have been designed to predict the affects of such a scenario, indicate that heavy ice storms will become more prevalent in our mid section in the years to come.

What can be done to minimize the seeming chaos that accompanies these new threats to our friends in the plain states?

The primary problem is the downing of electric lines caused by the weight of ice accumulation on the cables themselves and on nearby trees the limbs of which often collapsing onto those wires and bringing them to the ground.

Repairing these grids time after time at costs that will certainly eventually run into billions of dollars will only serve to strip the pockets of both utility companies and taxpayers at a time when neither may be in the position to carry the freight.

The long term answer is a program of re-cabling under ground in all areas that are susceptible to these violent new conditions.

While going underground will be very expensive at the onset, its long term affects will be more than justified!

I have always thought overhead wiring to be an ugly and dangerous aspect to any community, and as archaic as the armored vehicles that still carry bundles of cash!

We have to start thinking out of the box!
