The NYPIRG Straphangers' Campaign has released its annual Pokey Awards!

And the Pokey goes to...

The M23, with an average speed of 4.0 mph at midday. That's a minor improvement over last year's Pokey, which went to the M14A with an average speed of 3.9. That route improved to 4.8 mph this year.

The first annual Schleppie Award for unreliability (introduced last year as the "Unreliables" list) goes to...

The M1 for service delays 32.8% of the time. The M1 led the pack last year, too, but service was found to be unreliable only 27.6% of the time.

The Pokey survey includes 23 routes that have previously been identified as "the slowest" in 2004. Speeds were calculated based on a single round-trip taken at 12:00 noon between May 22 and October 11, 2007. The Schleppie survey includes 42 "high-volume" routes. Ratings were determined based on wait assessment and schedule adherence, weighted for peak and off-peak times.

As I wrote on BusChat, I believe that the best way to alleviate the problems of the M23 would be to implement some kind of proof-of-payment system for fare collection and open both doors at bus stops.
