Sunrise Coach Lines, Inc. #101
Greenport, LI, NY
GM SDH5301 delivered May 1960. Serial # ...0002
Rear freight compartment by Hudson Body (NJ) if I remember correctly.
Loss of 9 seats = 44 passenger
At the end of the passenger aisle a door connected to the freight compartment.
Sunrise hauled auto parts, newspapers, fresh seafood and whatever along the route from Greenport-Riverhead-East Hampton.

Jimbo,

Sunrise Coach # 101 is certainly a candidate for the GM New Look Oddity file!

You are correct regarding Hudson Body Works of Hoboken, New Jersey (now defunct) who was the premier rebuilder of 'almost totaled' buses in the Northeast region and, in fact, was franchised by GM as an authorized shop.

We, at Green Line (NY), sought their expert craftsmen on three jobs including a brand new 4512 (#102) that caught fire after being parked over smoldering leaves at Jamaica Terminal, a 4507 (#926) that turned into a tall narrow bus after being squeezed between a trolley car and a Queensboro bridge stanchion and a 5104 (#365) that lost its whole from clip after colliding with the rear end of a crane cab as it was swinging out at a construction site.

I want you to know that every one of these buses returned in factory new condition - Hudson was really amazing!

Shown below is #102 in Jamaica shortly after its return to service - note that the two original extra decorative stainless wings under the windshield are missing and were probably deemed as unneeded cost wise.

Best regards and Happy Holiday,

Mr.L'

Sunrise also had a SDH4502, number 102 (serial 008). I believe it also had a rear baggage compartment like 101. Pretty neat modification of a standard GM product to a specialized situation. Thanks for posting this.

Very interesting...I had no idea of this existence....I wonder what and where they hauled? To my knowledge, they had no connection with the national bus package express (Greyhound and other carrier's) network....
