While surfing on E-bay today, I came across this picture

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Elmhurst-17-B-W-Orig-Neg/201138421635?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D23845%26meid%3D8683447088105960697%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D10180%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D201138421635

1. Any inforation about Elmhurst Transit would be appreciated. Also the bus and where the picture was taken

2 - I discovered that there is an Elmhurst Ilinois.

3 - The company was probably absorbed into the PACE system.

3 - Best guess about location is Chicago, one of PACE's aervice area. It was taken in a Jewish neigborhodd since there i.s a kosher butcher/deli in the back grpund. Although I grew up in Sunnyside, Queens and the store to the left seems to say Sunyside, they other stores are not from my old neighborhood.

Thanks in advance for any help with this puzzler.

Also I have interest in bidding on this item, nor do I know the seller.

ECA,

I see that you also spotted the Kosher legend on the deli sign!

Elmhurst Transit Company was not associated with Elmhurst, New York and the Ridgewood Coach Company, a small charter outfit from that city line section of Queens was the only operator in New York City that ever used buses of Beck manufacture which is what Elmhurst #17 is.

The location of #17 probably is in the well known Chicago suburb of Elmhust, Illinois as there aren't too many other Elmhursts on the map.

Photo courtesy of 'ken6264' and is available at eBay as item # 201138421635.

Best regards,

WCA

Thanks to Webmaster Michael P, he posted some additional info on Bus-Chat in response to my link and made me really kick myself and make Mr. L smack his palm on his forehead if he ever drove the Q-60. It might have been around this time based upon the two parked cars.

The picture is not in Elmhurst, Illionois but rather the north side of Queens Blvd, between 45th and 46th Streets. i grew up 2 and 1/2 blocks away on 43rd St off of QB, and had long forgotten the Queen of the Sea. I do remember eating at the Kosher restaurant. It was run by 4 brothers. Harry, the heaviest of them was the cook. They expanded in the mid-1960's and were gone, IIRC by the mid-70's. Can't remember the name. Next to the delicatessen is pictured the Exelsior Bar.
When that became the Merry-Go-Round bar, I don't know but it had to be shortly after the picture, because I only remember it as the MGR. It had a small wooden platform around the circular bar. It rotated slowly around the liquor. Heck of a tumble if you fell off the stool and on to the stationary floor.

ECA,

You could have fooled me on the Elmhurst # 17 being on Queens Boulevard.

There were no markers such as lamp posts or street signs to go by and all the stores along the line looked pretty much alike to me.

Yes, I drove Q-60 quite often and, believe it or not, I got lost on my first run!

While we did drive the route in training and I did have notes as to how to go from Jamaica Avenue and Queens Boulevard to the South Jamaica terminus while working a meal break, I became lost on Jamaica Avenue and had to ask a passenger where to turn and he was kind enough to lead me all the way to the last stop - P.S. I whispered to him that his next ride with me would be free.

Best regards,

WCA
