In light of the last of the 9800s and 9900s being retired in Queens, how long are the CNG tanks going to last on these Orion V CNGs in Nassau? Aren't they close to being up?

Nassau County is Long Island. Forum is Long Island. This is very much on-topic. And even if it was off-topic, a few clicks of the mouse and I can either move it or make it disappear. We don't normally deduct points for posting in the wrong place.

I have several questions about the CNG tanks.

1 - What does one cost? Would it be cheaper to buy new tanks and refurbish the bus or to buy a new bus and new tanks?

2 - If a newer CNG bus cannot continue to operate due to mechanical problems, can those tanks be removed and placed on another bus, like the seats, fareboxes?

1. Don't know for sure, but the tanks have a pretty big price tag on them. I assume this is the reason why the MTA did not repower LI bus's 1992, and 1996-1998 Orion V CNGs back in the mid 2000s. Too many buses (and I assume that this is why NYCT's Orion VII OG CNGs may not get repowered again).
2. Yes, the tanks can easily be placed on another CNG. It's happened before, so long that it did not catch fire.

Normally the tanks expire in conjunction with the planned 12-year service life of the bus. Putting new tanks on old buses is generally not a wise use of funds, but sometimes new buses cannot be acquired fast enough and the old bus has to be kept in service a little longer.

Well, helpfully, NICE bus can get the funds to overhaul the remaining 2000 Orion V CNGs to get new tanks.

New tanks run about $7500.00. There are 8 on an Orion V.

Damn, no wonder MTA Long Island bus didn't repower their 1992, and 1996-1998 Orion V CNGs.
