When I was a kid in the 50's we traveled from Queens to the Bronx by bus. Before crossing the Bronx Whitestone Bridge the driver stopped and collected a toll, a nickel I think, with a device (we called it the toll 'gun') that he pointed at you and the coin was placed into a slot in the 'barrel'. As a reward for behaving in the long trip - three transfers - I was allowed to insert the coins. Does anyone remember this? Or better yet actually have a vintage 'toll gun?

Is this what you are talking about?
I believe that Fifth Avenue Coach conductors also used these on the double deckers...

At my alma mater - Green Bus Lines (NY) - our starters carried these devices for use in loading passengers through rear doors during rush hours which sped the process up immensely.
However, they did not make change so the only riders who could enter at the rear had to have the exact fare.
I don't remember off hand as to whether these machines were capable of accepting more than one denomination of coin or if they accepted pennies at all.
Regards,
Mr. 'L'

I know this is an old thread, but I recall similar on Queens Transit, when the fare was $0.15.....the inspector stood outside the rear door, you deposited a dime into the handheld register, and dropped the nickel into a moneybag he carrierd in his other hand.....I believe you could hear a bell ring, as you pushed the dime into the slot....
