It's early afternoon sometime in the warmer months of 1963 that we see fleet # 55 - a 1946 GM Coach Model TDH 3610 and one of thirty-five likenesses numbered between 50 and 84 operating for the Third Avenue Railway System's Westchester Street Transportation Company, Inc. bus division of Mount Vernon, New York.

Purchased principally to replace aging pre war Whites inherited from Staten Island Coach Company, these 3610's arrived flagged for and dressed in commonly owned Surface Transportation garb (including their unseen trademark 'Golden Glow' headlamps) but clearly state their legal operation status just behind the forward wheel well as being Westchester Street Transportation.

Looking north from Mount Vernon's South First Avenue toward the now defunct Park Avenue New Haven Railroad overpass, # 55 can be seen heading west on East First Street.

Taken sometime in 1965 at the company's Garden Avenue yards in Mount Vernon, New York we see fleet # 2288 - a late 1946 44 passenger GM Coach Model TD 4507 operating for Fifth Avenue Coach Lines (FACL) subsidiary Westchester Street Transportation Company, Inc. (WST).

#2288, purchased new by Fifth Avenue, was transferred to their southern Westchester division along with forty other likenesses as well as twenty TD 4506's, fourteen 4509's and the only TD 5001 in 1962 when Fifth Avenue and its affiliates operating within New York City were taken over by the then newly formed Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MaBSTOA).

Founded in 1926 as an affiliate of Third Avenue Railway System (TARS), WST was created to compliment TARS vast network of trolley lines in southern Westchester and then to replace them through the thirties and forties and continued to operate under FACL tutelage from 1956 until takeover by Liberty Coaches in 1969.

# 2288 did receive a minor face lift in the mid fifties including *mandatory directional signals, a heavy paired window style front bumper and updated GM badge under the windshield.

*It is interesting to note that, for whatever the reason, no Fifth Avenue Yellow, GM, or Mack coach in the Old Look or pre Old Look era aside from fifty-one TD 4506's and all TDH 5106's carried factory directional signals and those buses sans the feature that were still operating in the fifties were forced by PSC regulation to have them installed - this is the same company that ran buses until 1935 without headlights?!

#2288, which is signed for the #A line between New Rochelle and the 241st. Street Subway in The Bronx, awaits shop work as evidenced by the driver's repair ticket under the windshield wiper.

In this 1966 shot taken at the Garden Avenue Yards of Westchester Street Transportation Company in Mount Vernon, New York we see fleet # 2253, another of the nearly ninety buses that arrived from Fifth Avenue Coach Lines in 1962 escaping MaBSTOA's takeover of that company's New York City operations.

# 2253 - a 1946 44 passenger GM Coach Model TD 4506 and one of twenty-one likenesses in the transfer, shows off its 1950's facelift including a heavy paired window type front bumper, recessed sealed beam headlamps to replace its original bug eyed fixtures, after market directional signals under the headlamps and the addition of stainless steal wings with the latest (at the time) GM badge under the windshield.

Shown about to leave the garage, # 2253 is signed for the #M line between New Rochelle and the Tuckahoe Railroad Station on the Metro-North Harlem Line.

Another Fifth Avenue Coach Lines orphan is seen at the Garden Avenue Yards of the Westchester Street Transportation Company (WST) in Mount Vernon, New York in the below image dated sometime in 1963.

Fleet # 2390, a 1950 44 passenger GM Coach Model TDH 4509 and one of seventy-five likenesses numbered 2363 to 2437 originally delivered to Fifth Avenue, became one of only fourteen of those 4509's to be dispatched to WST in 1962.

It appears as though # 2390 is in the process of being prepared for a repaint to WST's typical off white over a putrid shade of pea soup green with a rather unimpressive lettering and numbering style.

The identical width of # 2390's single passenger sashes to either side of the rear and emergency doors tells us that it was an early 4509 that had not been subjected to the roof strengthening elements that were added to production in later phases.

Parked at Dyre Avenue and Boston Post Road in the Eastchester section of The Bronx we see fleet #300 - a 1936 21 passenger White Motor Company Model 706 and one of twenty five likenesses numbered 300 to 324 carrying the flag of Surface Transportation System but owned and operated by affiliate Westchester Street Transportation Company of Mount Vernon, New York.

The versatile White 706 chassis, which was built expressly for small low cost bus applications and which served Westchester well into the late 40's, gained power from White's own 270 cubic inch six cylinder model 11A truck engine combined with a mechanical transmission.

Bodies for the 706 line, which were all steel except for steam bent plywood roofs, were provided by Bender of Cleveland and sat on 170 inch wheelbase frames.

Of note on #300 are the slots over the driver's side window which admitted fresh air to the New York State required full time mechanical ventilation system.

Left to contemplate the weeds at its company facility on Garden Avenue in the New York suburb of Mount Vernon we see fleet # 3022 - a 1940 27 passenger Twin Coach Model 27-G and one of fifty likenesses numbered from 3000 to 3049 delivered in increments between 1939 and 1942 to Third Avenue Railway System bus division affiliate Westchester Street Transportation Company, Inc.

The gasoline powered Twin 27-G was extremely reliable and ideal in low capacity local operation and as a feeder to the more heavily traveled trunk lines.

An unusual characteristic of the model was the fact that the engine sat directly above the rear axle over a vertical drive shaft with its rear wheels just behind the bumper (actually, the rear wheels are where the fronts should be and vice versa).

The 3000 series Twins, which carried the Surface Transportation System flag, were purchased expressly to replace three local traction lines in New Rochelle and remained there for most of their useful lives.

Here's another of the referenced fleet of 1940 27 passenger Twin Coach Model 27-G's operating for Third Avenue Railway System affiliate Westchester Street Transportation Company.

The 27-G was among the earliest Twin Coach models to have its engine mounted at the rear instead of underfloor amidships but placed it precariously over the rear axle which, in this case, was immediately behind the rear bumper giving it little protection against severe damage from behind.

Of note on # 3013 shown below, aside from the adaption of the company's postwar angel wings and bid livery combining a mixture of almost kitchen white and bright red, is the windshield wiper system transmitting power to only one arm and using a rod seen just under the screens to drag the other arm along.

# 3013 trundles the streets of New Rochelle on the 'J' line heading to the docks of the then Fort Slocum military base on Long Island Sound at the very Southeast corner of Westchester County.

About Fort Slocum;

Fort Slocum, New York was a US military post which occupied Davids' Island in the western end of Long Island Sound in New Rochelle, New York from 1867 - 1965. The fort was named for Major General Henry W. Slocum, a Union corps commander in the American Civil War.
