I'm not a regular rider of the five Veolia bus routes around my part of Nassau County, as I drive or walk on my errands. However, allow a comment about fare box payment. Was it in the last century that Helena Williams and George Pataki replaced the old fare boxes with those that accept Metrocards and coins, but no dollar bills? The old boxes took paper currency. She held a public hearing in a Mineola county building to listen to comments. I complained about the lack of acceptance of paper money. The answer was, "Use a Metrocard."
----
Currently, $2.50 is deducted from a regular pay-per-ride Metrocard, and my senior card would pay $1.25. A cash-paying passenger gets the ride for $2.25 in coins or $1.10 for senior.
----
Presumably, the pay-by-smart-phone option would pay the regular fare, not the higher Metrocard fare. The rider would not have to hoard 18 quarters for a round trip on NICE, nor would he have to find the rather scarce source of a Metrocard. So Veolia, in my opinion, is offering convenience with this pay-by-phone option.
