Hempstead Bus in 1948 also had a handfull of 36 passanger Macks.They were used on the Hempstead Baldwin Lynbrook loop,the Grand ave. Baldwin route and the East Meadow run.The big Macks ran Freeport,Mineola,and the Hicksville Hempstead route. Sat. service on the Baldwin Harbor run that merged with the Grand Ave route.Perhaps the newest and biggest buses to ever serve Baldwin Harbor,even if it was Sat.only.Remember it well.Hempstead was by far the finest bus company in every respect to serve the Twsp. of Hempstead. |

Robert,
First of all, you're right on the money when you say that Hempstead Bus Corporation was the finest operation in The Town of Hempstead and I would go as far as saying the entire County of Nassau as well.
Their choice of livery was elegant and their buses and shops were kept immaculate which was reflected in their service to their passengers.
The company did buy eight 1942 35 passenger Mack Model LD-3G's which must be what you are referring to because their next purchase was for 41 passenger Macks in 1948 as seen in the rosters above.
The very front section of one of the LD's is shown behind the Ford in the photo below.

Mr.L.An honor to have your response.The reason for my original comment was I have never seen the small Macks on any of the rosters,so it was an attempt to call attention to its absence. I never rode on the LDs but did ride all of the mentioned routes on the small Macks.When I first saw the new Macks I thought they were the large ones and couldn't figure out why the were on the less dense routes,but they were 36 seaters,which made sense. PS: During the war and post wore period I used to ride the Q6.Q8,Q9,Q101,Q11,and I remember one driver at the Jamaica Terminal who looked like Edward G Robinson.May have been an owner driver,stockholder.Long shot! Would you have run into him when you arrived? Also remember that bus stops were stretched to every four blocks...The drivers had great timing and skill to turn east on to Archer Ave,and go like blazes crossing New York Blvd.into the GL Terminal.They never seemed to miss the light...In those years the big Macks looked to be monsters due to their size...Thxs again,Green Lantern...B |

While the focus of this post is already on S-60 To Smith Haven Mall's very comprehensive roster, I am adding a photo of fleet # 159 to the written record for posterity purposes.
Seen on the Jamaica, Queens route with a heading of New Hyde Park Road and Hillside Avenue in neighboring Nassau County is fleet # 159 - a 1943 41 passenger Twin Coach Model 41-RG and one of what is believed to be at least fifteen numbered 150 to 164 operating for Schenck Transportation Company of Floral Park, New York.
Of note are the rare outward opening front doors and the curtain behind the driver which, on GM equipment (at least that I drove) was a shade that pulled down and attached to the rear of the seat.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, Take Note;
Snapped somewhere on Long Island in the early fifties and marked 'No Passengers' is fleet #96 - a 1942 35 passenger Mack Model 'Improved' LD-3G and, unlike eight likenesses already rostered, was purchased used from an unknown source by the Schenck Transportation Company, Inc. of Floral Park, New York.
The 'improvement' mentioned above being the adaption of an angled windshield but not the roof mounted air horns or the obviously borrowed set of stainless steel wings under the windshield (probably from a GM Old Look Suburban job).
The Mack Model LD-3G was an economic medium duty coach favored by many smaller operators and gained its power from a 6 cylinder 354 cubic inch 150 h.p. Mack Model EN-510 gasoline engine coupled to a three speed mechanical transmission and nearly 400 were built between 1941 and 1943.

The photos of the Schenck and Hempstead buses sure brought back memories. Besides Hempstead Bus, many other Nassau County operators had similar small Ford buses - Schenck, Nassau Bus Line, and Universal Bus Services, to name three such companies.
Also, I remember the Schenck Mack in the last posting as handling school runs in the mid-1950s for the Great Neck school district. Schenck was its long time school bus contractor. |

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, take note of additions to Schenck Tours.
Seen (upper image) in Williamsburg, Virginia and contracted to Biss Tours of Rego Park, New York is fleet # 521 - a 1968 or 1969 GM Coach Model PD 4903 operating for Schenck Tours, Inc. of Floral Park, New York.
Schenck watchers will note that # 521 and a sibling #'d 518 (lower image) were purchased used and still carried the colors of the prior owner.
However, in anticipation of concentrating on charter operations after the loss of their local transit business to Nassau County, Schenck Transportation did begin to buy the following 49 passenger GM Parlor Cars under the Schenck Tours name;
3 1971 Model PD-4905's numbered 508, 509 and 510.
2 1973 Model PD-4905A's numbered 514 and 515.
3 1974 Model PD-4905A's numbered 516, 517 and 518.
3 1975 Model PD-4905A's numbered 519, 520 and 521
Note; obviously, the original 4903's shown were either renumbered or sold off before the arrival of the 4905A's.
