Hopefully the always-knowledgeable Mr. "L" (or, one of the other experts!) will be able to shed some light on this one! Wink

I was just talking to my good friend Bruce on the phone (this is the same fellow who was raised in Paterson, who recalled the COMPREHENSIVE buses at the Erie Railroad's Chambers St. ferry terminal, in the late 1940's)

Bruce was telling me about an old NJ "indy" company, which had owners hailing from North Haeldon.

He THINKS this company was the "Hamilton Bros." (or "Harrison Bros.") Bus Company; the route that he remembers ran through Paterson and was the #22 BUNKER HILL.

According to him, the buses were "short models" of the GM's (painted a chocolate brown)

He also recalls the route running on Warren St. (Paterson).

He also remembered a skinny, older driver everyone called "Splintz" who would actually leave his route to deposit my friend Bruce's elderly grandmother, aunt, and young sister in front of thier door on Putnam St. in Paterson, after a package-laden shopping excursion. (Man! Talk about "door to door service".....imagine doing this today!!)

This would be about 1954/55.

Just thought I'd inquire and see if there is anything out there on this long-forgotten line.....again, thanks in advance for any and all input.......

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

I have no knowledge of a Hamilton or Harrison Bus Company in New Jersey.

However, if they or it were or was an IBOA member in northern Jersey they may be listed in the 'New Jersey Independents' issue of Motor Coach Age and I'll check that.

Apropos to your mention of the 'personal' services provided by either of the mentioned operators, I am herewith reprising a piece below that I wrote back in 2007 which I think you'll enjoy (it needed an airing anyway).

Groceries by Green Line

So you thought Green Bus Lines (NY) only delivered people – wrong! How about your morning paper, a bottle of milk and even a dozen eggs?

That’s just what the affluent citizens of Mott Avenue (millionaire’s row) just outside ‘downtown’ Far Rockaway came to expect from their local bus driver a generation ago.

The Q22A (Bayswater route), the shortest of all the Green Line franchises, ran from the heart of the village at Cornaga Avenue westward down to the bay along Mott for about a mile or so.

This was a ‘one bus’ line driven by the same chauffeur from its inception with its main passenger base being household help.

I never new the driver nor did I ever ride or drive the route but the stories of his escapades made him a legend among his colleagues.

Always given the oldest and most dilapidated bus in the fleet, this entrepreneur would fill the back seats with loads of groceries before making his first run in the morning.

His customers would be waiting at their curbs at appointed times to pick up the orders.

I’m certain that the company was well aware of this little ‘side line’ but overlooked it because I’m also certain that it was the ‘political pull’ of the local citizenry that created the Q22A in the first place!

Pictured below is Q22A 'Bayswater' bus # 441 - a 1933 Mack model 6-BC-3S in Far Rockaway about 1946.

Note that because this bus was manufactured before the acquisition of the Q22A route a 'Bayswater' placard appears in the windshield instead of within the destination scroll.
