CT Transit Nova articulated #1047 was involved in an accident with a New Haven police car responding to a call this morning, sending about two dozen people to local hospitals. The police officer involved in the collision, who was the most serious injured, has been released from the hospital.

The accident occurred at the corner of Temple and Elm Streets in downtown New Haven. The police car crashed into a stone post, while the bus jumped the curb and ended up on the New Haven Green, knocking down a lamp post in the process. Because of the Veteran's Day holiday, pedestrian traffic was lighter than normal, and no pedestrians were injured.

From WTNH:
Quote:
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- More than a dozen people including a New Haven police officer were sent to the hospital this morning after a police car and a CT Transit bus collided.

The crash happened around 10:45 on the Elm Street side of the Green at Temple St., near one of the churches and the public library, and involves one of the double-length articulated buses.

New Haven Mayor John DeStefano said no one was killed in the crash. 26 people were on board the bus, including children. Four of the passengers have refused treatment. The rest were taken to the hospital to be examined.

Authorities identified the officer involved in the crash as Officer Victor Herrera. A spokesman for Yale-New Haven Hospital said the police officer's injuries are not life-threatening.

According to police, the crash occurred while the officer was responding to a report of a fight at Union Station.

"The police were going down Elm Street at a fast speed. One police car passed the light. By the time the second police car came, there was a bus going down Temple Street," said Bonnie Syphrett.

The police vehicles vehicles were supposedly traveling at a high rate of speed, which seems crazy given the area (near the main transfer point in New Haven). I'm not sure about the traffic laws in Connecticut, but I thought that police were supposed to slow down or stop if they cannot account for all vehicles in the intersection.

A poster on another board has a link showing the surveillance footage from the bus involved in the accident.
