A lot of nostalgia here, for both bus and trolley enthusiasts.......

Yep, those classic De Soto cabs indeed further date this nostalgic view!

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

Good to see you back!

The photo is fantastic and certainly portends the future of the TARS cars!

I would put the image somewhere around 1948 but you really can't go by the DeSoto SkyViews because for 1946, 47 and 48 they were identical as were all other makes in the Chrysler lineup.

Best reards,

Mr. 'L'

The first photo has to be the summer of 1948, because the T/Tremont Ave. car is still running (it quit on Aug. 22, 1948, part of the the last TARS streetcar lines that were motorized). The GM 4507 bus on the left is a new TARS/Surface Transit vehicle used on an unidentified Bronx route. On the far right in the distance there appears to be a Board of Transportation GM 4507 on the Q44 route, identifiable by the green and gray paint scheme (faintly visible). It too was new in 1948.

In the 1962 photo, the GM New Look under the IRT el could either be on the BX31 Southern Blvd. (ex-Surface Transit, recently MABSTOA) or on the Q44, by this time a NYC Transit Authority route. Can't tell for sure because the photo is B & W and the el shadows make it difficult to see any paint scheme or letterboard. If there is no side emergency door then it was a NYCTA bus on the Q44.

Fellows:

Great historical info!

Thanks for taking the time to share it here!

Info like this really helps one to better understand just what we are seeing, in those long-ago views.......

Andy, in the 1962 picture, I can barely make out the "New York City Transit Authority" lettering at the roof line. (I used a magnifying glass). That would make it a Q44, possibly a new 2000 series GM 5301.
