Below, you'll find just about everything you've ever wanted to know about GM's Thermo-Matic Heating and Ventilation System.

Thermo-Matic, an option on all GM transit style coaches, was introduced in mid 1946 and, in its configuration, was available until the end of the 'heavy duty' Old Look era in 1959.

As seen in the schematics, the system was certainly far more sophisticated than just the intake over the destination sign and the equipment cabinet above the driver's compartment that we are used to seeing. In fact, Thermo-Matic was very much akin to today's Climate Control less an air conditioning compressor.

Two points not mentioned in the brochure; On Thermo-Matics bound for New York State properties, driver's did have the ability to turn off the heating element but not the circulating fans which had to continue to run as long as the engine was in operation.

On our buses at Green Line (NY), we had a small 'T' shaped lever on the side of the TM cabinet (which is not shown in the diagrams) by which we could opt for either 'ALL FRESH' air from the register over the destination sign or 'REC' which circulated only the air in the cabin.

Photos courtesy of 'auto-lit' and are available on eBay as item #370773474108.
