We recently picked this sweet piece of bus up at an auction for a staggeringly low price, but we can't seem to find much information on what model it is. The paperwork tells us it is a 1961 GMC, but we don't know much more than that. Can anyone help us out?

kriley88,

Whatever it may be, it has a GMC truck chassis supporting it with a body by others.

Your best bet is to find any builder's plates for both the body and chassis which may give you more information.

Many regards and, BTW, welcome to BusTalk where we look forward to your valued contributions and opinions.

Looks like a Coachette body.

I'm beginning to think that it may be a Wayne Body.

On page 22 of the March/April 1981 Motor Coach Age covering the story of Pioneer Bus Corporation of Brooklyn, New York a Wayne pusher is shown with a very similar body carried on GMC underpinnings.

I think it's about as close as it gets!

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

It appears to be a Ward built bus with GMC chassis and power train, circa 1961. Ward was principally a school bus manufacturer mounting their bodies on either GMC and/or International-Harvester chassis and engines. This particular model resembles the "Safeguard" model.

Couldn't find anything on that model. But from the windshield down the front end is definitely a Ward body.

The bus in the link is actually from about 1970-1974. Miami Dade County Schools had a large fleet of these with both GMC and International chassis and rear mounted engines. They were model P-34.

I refer to the bus in the 2 pictures as model "Safeguard" as a similar bus with this name appears in a 1961 Ward school bus catalog in my collection.

Except it's definitely not a school bus body, which leads me to believe it's a Coachette. These were built under license by Ward, which explains the similar front clip.

Ripta gets the prize. While this is not the same model as the one that kriley88 bought, there is no question that it's a Coachette.

Boy is this confusing to get information on! Coachette was an independent company that put Wade bodies on truck chassis, originally used Ford then went to GMC and Chevy chassis.
Several sites claim that Crown made Coachette buses in 1960 and 1961, but another site says that Crown was just the west coast distributor for Coachette buses made by Coachette with bodies by Ward. Whew!!!

Motor Coach Age published the history of Coachette (August 1979) in March 1980 a follow up was published and on page 12 is a photo of a Coachette in Amador Stage Lines' colors (originally one of two for Yosemite and listed as order number JC-148; Ward body number 8187 and 8188; GMC SPA5000-N2160G and N2159G -- May 10, 1961).

If the above bus is not one of these then it's a twin!
