rwilenker,

Great find!

Of course, while the NYCO TDH 4509 # 2791 is important, my eye immediately fell upon the FDNY 1927 Ahrens-Fox 'Closed Cab' fire pumper at the scene.

The large chromium plated globe ahead of the engine, which was thought to be decorative, was the centerpiece of a very sophisticated (for its time) centrifical pump which raised and smoothed outgoing pressure.

I remember them well and you always new when they were coming by the squaking sound they made and the fact that they had no mufflers!

Best regards,

According to Motor Coach Age, February 1969, NYCO assigned fleet numbers to specific routes. The articles states that #s 2737-2801 were assigned to route 6 Broadway. The side destination sign clearly shows a "6".

2791 was a TDH 4509 serial number 320 of 1949 vintage.

Originally based at NYCO's 54th Street Depot it ended its days with MaBSTOA running out of the 12th Street Depot on former NYCO routes 12 Spring and Delancy and 14-14th Street Crosstown (as listed in a MaBSTOA bus assignment for December 1965)

Great shot, Mr. L!
You have images of a classic NYCO bus (GM Old Look) and a classic FDNY rig (an Ahrens-Fox engine, whose piston pumpers typically sported that big chrome globe up front).
