All:
Many of us "older generation" NY-area bus fans, when asked to recall an "old" New York bus, usually will think of an Old Look (or a Mack) first and foremost, and a Fishbowl, secondly.
In the grand scheme of things (IMHO) the sleek Flex New Look often gets overlooked, when discussing "vintage" New York buses.
Here then, is a thread to recall the days when the New look was still a commonplace sight on the streets of New York.....
"NYO"

Thanks for posting those great shots. Remember all of those buses very well - hard to believe it;s been 40+ years since those shots were taken.
To answer your question - IMHO because GMs were so numerous, both old and new look, they obviously are at the top of anyone's nostalgia list. Macks were also fairly prominent in the 1950s and some lasted till 1971. Since none were built after 1960 they definitely meet the nostalgia definition.
Problem with Flxibles is that there were no "old look Flxes" and the first ones did not appear in NYC till 1964 (Triboro Coach and NYCTA low 5000s in Brooklyn). Even then they weren't too numerous and did not run outside of Brooklyn or Queens. So there was no "old look to new look transition" as you had with the GMs. Remember too that Flxes did not appear in large numbers in all boroughs till about 1974, when between MABSTOA, TA, Triboro, Green, Jamaica Bus, and Liberty Lines Express there were enough of them to be seen all over NYC every day. And 1974, to many of us, is not that many years ago - I was already a twenty-something then. |
