San Diego’s high fares getting higher

San Diego does a lot of great things with public transit. The county’s Metropolitan Transit System has its fair share of drawbacks. At the top of the list is the highest fares in California. San Diego Trolley fares vary by distance, but bus fares vary by classification, with most San Diegans paying $1.75 or $2.25 for local or urban buses.

The Union-Tribune reports that MTS is facing a $9.2 million shortfall and is eliminating the $1.75 fare distinction and making all local fares the higher $2.25 by January 2009. Also, transfers would be eliminated and be replaced by day passes.

Presently, transfers are free but passengers are required to pay the fare difference when boarding a more expensive service. A rider going from a $1.75 bus to a $2.25 bus must pay the 50 cent difference. Also, day passes are not sold aboard buses, but are sold at Trolley ticket vending machines and Transit Stores. Plus, multi-day passes are progressively cheaper: $9 for two days, $12 for three days and $15 for four.

In addition, MTS is looking to reduce service on a dozen unspecified bus routes and increasing advertising revenue.
