Old timer here from Newark, NJ, late 1950's. Rode many Public Service busses.
Had a high school friend whose father had some kind of connection with PS, and what I learned was that PS started a numbering system in 1947 where the first letter was "A", then "B" in 1948.
The 1st number following the letter was for the type of service the bus was
intended, and it included the type of transmission. The city busses had those
awful 2 speed trans., which used a torque converter and planetary gear for low, bthen direct drive with a converter lockup clutch, IIRC.
Busses for traveling between major cities had manual transmissions. |

The old "drop-shift" GM transmission was legend, and riding on a restored historic vehicle with that transmission today is a joy for some of us other old-timers!

I think I still have a stiff neck from years of banging between gears. |
