Taken at the White Plains Railroad Station in lower Westchester County, New York in the late forties, we see fleet # 3026 - a 1940 Twin Coach Model 27-G and one of fifty likenesses numbered from 3000 to 3049 operating for the Westchester Division of Surface Transportation System of New York and delivered in increments between 1939 and 1942.

In this model, known as a 'baby Twin', with its rather unorthodox placement of the rear end, the manufacturer mounted a 320 cubic inch Hercules 'TC' gasoline engine and Spicer transmission directly atop the rear axle with a vertical drive line to the differential yoke below.

While no one can really understand the reasoning for the configuration, it was successful to the extent that many hundreds in various lengths and modes of power were built and sold between 1935 and the beginning of the war.

# 3026 is seen in its original pre war factory paint scheme and carries a rather awkward version of New York's required mechanical ventilation system on its roof.

Joining Surface Transportation System's Westchester County division fleet # 3026 above is sibling # 3023 in a somewhat clearer but still fuzzy photograph taken circa 1950 (see specs above).

# 3023 is seen on the Mount Vernon Division Fifth Avenue # C route heading to Boston Road.

Photo courtesy of '4509bus' and is up for bid on eBay as item # 350680665072.
