As seen tonight on BusChat:
Numbers are year-to-date...
MDBF= Means Distance Between Failures (in miles)
MPG= Miles Per Gallon
Systemwide MDBF average is 4,458.
TEST BUSES GROUP (Orion VII EPA 2010; Nova LFS-40ft; New Flyer XD40) - "together" MDBF: 12,410... 3.3 MPG.
-vs-
12+ year old (RTS/Orion V) buses: MDBF: 2,800... 2.6 MPG
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW- 2011/2012 New Flyer C40LF: MDBF: 8,400... 2.37 (equivalent) MPG
-vs-
OLD & nearly extent- 1999/2000 New Flyer C40LF: MDBF 3,605... 2.06 (equivalent) MPG
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prevost X3-45 average MDBF: 12,300... 3.72 MPG
-vs-
12+ year old MCI D4500 average MDBF: 5,400.... 3.34 MPG
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nova LFS artics MDBF: 5,600.... 2.67 MPG
-vs-
12+ year old New Flyer D60HF MDBF: 2,200... a dismal 1.90 MPG
I suppose that brand new buses equipped with the latest powertrain technology, theoretically at least, should be posting some good early numbers.
Note that there are no HEV's in the mix at this time.
Perhaps the early "teething pains" and later maintenance costs of their HEVs motivated DOB to evaluate "clean diesel" and CNG powertrains. |

One of the first questions raised by these fresh metrics: are artics inherently failure-prone?
I ask this question only because the brand-new Nova LFSA's have significantly lower MDBF's than all other units. |

It appears so - the MDBF numbers I've seen in the past from NYCT had the New Flyer D60 artics with the lowest reliability numbers by far, and cities like Mississauga Ontario which have often run their 40-foot buses past 15 years typically retire articulated buses right at the 12-year mark. It probably has something to do with wear and tear on the articulation joint and possibly issues with the anti-jackknife system that is necessary in 'pusher' artics (those with a rear-mounted engine like a standard rigid bus).
