I'm not very big on railroad nostalgia but I sure know a 'cutie pie' locomotive when I see one!
Pictured, date unknown, in the Parkside section of West Philadelphia is fleet # 5689 - a Model RR B-1 Box Cab electric switcher operating for the one and only Pennsylvania Railroad Company.
Looking very much like a squeezed together version of Pennsy's fabulous 'DD1' (and probably almost as powerful), these B class 0-6-0 switchers were built in two groups; the 3900's which were always operated in pairs, and the 5680's that went solo.
A few of these venerable box cabs survived into the PC-era, doing passenger duty at the Sunnyside Yards in Queens, New York.
I guess what makes these diminutive workhorses so funny looking is the huge contact structures on their roofs.
Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is up for bid on eBay as item # 170950124009.

Mr 'L' -
I've been on hiatus here. In point of fact, the PRR B-1 more a design "cousin" to its P-5 design. It is a different species than earlier DD-1.
The earlier side rod driven. This as the engineering of the time, the drive motors could not be mounted directly to axles. The rest of it in the
advances in engineering...
Yep! the B-1 about the cutest thing. Usually, one could always spot one in Philadelphia...
