There have been many recent reports especially from the New York City area that manhole covers are now being stolen for their value as scrap iron.

I'm wondering whether this incident may have originated as one such failed attempt?

Just Google 'Manhole Cover Thefts' and you'll get some idea of how widespread and dangerous the problem is becoming.

I'm not sure if that was the case here, but manhole cover thefts are common in Connecticut.

Fortunately the damage was minor, and the bus was back in service Friday.
