In this 1946 scene at Penn Square in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and waiting to begin its next run on the Watch Factory line, we see fleet # 175 - a 1940 ACF Model 26-S and one of thirty seven likenesses numbered from 161 to 197 purchased in increments between 1939 and 1942 for the Conestoga Transportation Company of that Keystone State city.

The 28 passenger Model 26-S, which was produced in small quantities between 1937 and 1942, derived its power from a 377 cubic inch, 90 hp. Hall-Scott engine mounted underfloor amidships with its cooling fan and radiator located below the windshield and was ideal for low volume routes.

From its roots as a four mile horse car line between Lancaster and Millerville, Pennsylvania in 1874, which made it one of the earliest transportation companies in the U.S., Conestoga became a major player through the better part of the twentieth century in that 'Dutch Country' part of the state which is now serviced by its successor Red Rose Transit Authority.

As with Avenue B and East Broadway Transit in New York, Conestoga opted for much of its equipment pre-owned which included eight TDH 3612's from Schenck Transportation of Floral Park, NY and four TDH 4509's from Green Bus Lines of Jamaica, NY.

Photo courtesy of dfwu and is up for bid on eBay as item # 261008482999.
