Sitting forlorn as though waiting for the Grim Reaper in a photo taken in September of 1957 somewhere in the industrial environs of Portland, Oregon, we see fleet number 278 - a 1936 Mack Model 6-CW-3S and one of ten likenesses serial numbered between 1632 and 1641 that operated for the Rose City Transit Company but were originally purchased by the Portland Traction Company of that northwestern community.

The little heavy duty 25 passenger CW, powered by a 6 cylinder 354 cubic inch gasoline engine, was Mack's most popular pre-war offering with over thirteen hundred sold between 1935 and 1943 and many finding niches in low volume feeder route service for large city properties.

# 278 and its siblings were rare in that most CW's were single door equipped.

Of note are the Civil Defense window decals (familiar to those of us who lived through the cold war) which meant that the company was prepared to put itself at the disposal of the government in the event of enemy attack.

The Rose City Transit Company replaced the bankrupted Portland Traction Company in 1956 and, was itself, assimilated in December of 1969 by the Tri County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet).
