Seen somewhere within the environs of the 'City of Brotherly Love' and standing in respite on what appears to be a warm day in the early fifties is fleet # 861 - a 1947 Ford Transit Model 79B and one of fifty-five likenesses numbered 851 to 905 operating for the Philadelphia Transportation Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

14,000 of these lightweight coaches, comprised of Union City bodies mounted on Ford chassis, were manufactured from the late thirties to the late forties and, while their life expectancies were far shorter than other bus manufacturer's heavy duty and more expensive contemporaries, they filled an important niche in serving low volume feeder routes.

# 861 is signed for Route XA Broad-Olney Subway.

In 1949, the company added four 1944 Model 49B's numbered 822 to 825 to the fleet which were purchased from the Neibauer Bus Company of Bristol, Pennsylvania.

Who would've guessed just how lightweight these buses really were?!
