You 'Long Island' specialists will have to help me on this one because information is so limited.
Pictured below is fleet number 39 - a 1954 GM Coach Model TGH-3102 and the only one delivered to the Star Bus Lines, Inc. of Bellmore, New York in October of that year.
Unlike their heavy duty cousins and built upon steel frames and chassis, the light duty 3102's featured a 270 cubic inch Chevrolet truck engine coupled with a beefed up version of the same 'Dual Range HydraMatic' transmission used on Cadillac and Oldsmobile models.
In lieu of a more costly Thermo-Matic heating and ventilation system, a forced air heater/defroster unit was located in the dashboard with fresh air available to it from a small intake under the windshield similar to the system used on GM's suburbans.
While the popular 3102 broke no production records with only 1605 manufactured, it did take first place as the longest running model in GM/Yellow history being available from the beginning of 1953 to the end of 1963.
# 39 is seen in 1956 signed for Freeport - Roosevelt and, with the Railway Express yard in the background, could well be on layover at the Freeport railroad station.
Of note on # 39 are the custom directional signals which became very popular on these later 'Old Look' models.

Star Bus later (mid 60s) became Mid Island Transit, then was eventually absorbed into MSBA.
These small GM gas buses were mainstays on many smaller suburban routes. Another small Nassau County operator, Universal Bus in Great Neck, had two of these of 1957-58 vintage that had center doors. A larger version with three windows behind the rear door was built in the 1964-68 time frame - Universal Bus had two of those as well. |
