Seen posing for its family photo sometime in the very early twenties in Kearny, New Jersey is fleet/permit number 189 (make and body supplier unknown) operating as part of the Kearny/Arlington Independent Bus Owners Association (IBOA) of East Newark.

Before organized bus companies began to spring up in urban areas around the country in the mid to late twenties, riders depended heavily upon loose knit groups of owner/driver operations and, while illegal in most municipalities, were tolerated for lack of anything better at the time.

Interestingly, a fringe benefit enjoyed by a number of these 'rag tag' jitneys (especially in Northern New Jersey and Southern Connecticut) were contracts that they entered into with the City of New York Department of Plant and Structures to provide emergency services in the event of bus strikes or the financial failure of any city operator.

The thirty permits of Kearny/Arlington, which operated in the Kearny, Arlington and Rutherford areas of East Newark were sold to Public Service Coordinated Transport of New Jersey in the mid twenties.
