Pictured in mid 1975 somewhere in the environs of Pittsburgh, Pa. is fleet number 2441 - a 1971 GM Coach Model T8H 5307A and one of 185 numbered between 2400 and 2584 operating for the Port Authority of Allegheny County - successor to the Pittsburgh Motor Coach Company.
# 2441 doesn't exactly appear as its siblings did originally because its involvement in a serious front end accident in 1975 led to a complete modernization which was dubbed as 'The Extra Special Bus' and featured no less that six destination signs including what was then considered to be a 'giant' display over the windshield, and an interior finished in wood grain with high intensity lighting both in the step wells and outside over the doors.
Further improvements saw seats facing each other in 'conversation groups' ala commuter rail cars and stop request lights and buttons built into passenger stanchions.
The extra special bus kit was extended to a TDH 4518 and a planned third coach was never completed.
According to OMT records, # 2441 may have eventually found its way to Puerto Rico but this fact is not substantiated.

JimmiB,
Thanks for the color photo - mine was a bit fuzzy.
Back in Brooklyn, we had an old saying - 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it!'
I think that a GM new look looks hideous with that giant front sign - it just wasn't designed for that!
But, 'to each his own!'
Regards,
Mr. 'L' |
