As Maxwell Smart (special agent 86) would say; "It's the old flat bed trick Chief"!
Very interesting piece of film - thanks for sharing.

No problemo! I read in the comments section that the owner explained that there are not many of these types of buses that still have passenger seating. he is bent on restoring it to factory original. I can only hope he knows what he is getting himself into and has lots and lots and lots and lots etc etc of money!! believe me..I've been down that road and came back! LOL!
Here's a quote from the owner..
"This one won't ! [[ Be converted to a motor home]] only 230 or so of 1001 produced survive today, most are converted. only about 25 are still seated buses like this one. I'm hell bent on preservation."
And he's talking about restoring the twin engines>? Sheesh!

Ken -
Clip an "equipment junkie" dream!
1) I am reluctantly accepting, but do not approve of referring to the coaches in other than original GREYHOUND "Letter Lines" initial name.
2) Gotta' love the PETERBILT haul tractor. I'll estimate we hear a CUMMINS POWER block with installed Turbo-Whine feature?
3) Where's the road placards? This loaded high, and State movement Permits mandated.
4) A safety violation that makes me crazy. Note on loading, the "lift" operator position. One should never, ever stand so close to a cable
under load tension. The possible bad outcome provides a Ticket To Heaven!
5) What's going on with owner? 'Net entries report move to Peoria, IL, as in this clip.

That's great that that historically significant Scenic' will be restored as a bus, and not butchered up into a motorhome.
I think he explained that it would not be practicle or even possible to restore the original twin power configuration.
I would love to own one myself, but I have no place to keep it. |

T.D. -
You are correct, Sir! The dual power plant config was nothing but trouble. It did, in fact, lead to the GREYHOUND - G M blowup,
and so much for that marriage made in Heaven!

Cool video. I thought the same thing about standing in line with the cable. I've seen tow cables snap and you sure don't want to be in the way! |

Now that is severly dangerous. I guess in theory you can get a limb or something severed off. |

Yea, I mean the cost is just unbelievable to own and operate, as you may or may not know I owned an MCI Classic for four months and the cost for everything was just absolutely unbelievble.
I will stick to my 1/32 scale models |

I was also considering buying a newer coach such as an MCI 102D, which are affordable--a decent one for around $15k, but same problem....where do I keep it?
While the newer coach is not a collectible, parts are easier to obtain. |

Just fueling a full-sized motorcoach would set one back quite a lot of money. |

Those cables are dangerous alright and you really don't want to stand too close when they're under full tension as has been pointed out.
But, equally as perilous if not more so were the old split rings on the wheel rims which maimed or killed many a mechanic during tire changes.
I remember at Green Line that the shop had special cages for tire changing to prevent the rings from flying off and causing injury.

I concure with with Q65A. You can indeed get a more modern MCI which will undoubtly be more reliable. As far as fueling it goes, most MCIs typically have 125 gallon fuel tanks, I realize you wont be filling up 125 gallons everytime but the maintanance is rediculous. IE: 400 per tire.
I was thinking about chartering my 95 MCI Classic, but then realized that what if it breaks down, there is no dispatch to call, there is no bus coming to pick up the pax, there is no servicing the bus at the end of the day except my myself.
What I have done is chartered my own bus from Shortline, me as the driver..it is insured, the passengers are insured in the event of and accident, if it breaks down, there is a dispatcher to call, and there is another bus on the way and I get paid a mint!
It doesn't get much better than that.
Ken
PS it's been about 4 years since I sold my MCI Classic. |
