Dieseljim

I was wondering if there are any old Brockway schoolies running around and were any ever diesel powered rather than use the Continental gas engine commonly used in Brockway trucks. Just curious. I rode one coming home from school way back when.

It must have been really far back when because in my memory I have no recollection of Brockway as a school bus.

Brockway was never a bus builder but did supply their truck chassis to coach builders many years ago.

However, it is possible that any modern Brockway chassis used for this purpose could well have been Diesel powered.

Pictured below is what was a Green Line (NY) 1934 Brockway bus converted to a service car which, by the way, ran until well into the late fifties.

Some things take longer than others, but TWO YEARS???

I remember when I was towing Cadillacs out of Brooklyn back in the Sixties, there was a fleet of Brockway School Buses with Penn-Yan bodies. They bore more than a passing resemblance to Highway buses of the early Thirties. Now if I can just find a picture..........

Here's an interesting 1941 Brockway School Bus restoration that now resides in the town of Green Island just north of Albany, New York.

BTW; Brockway was a New York manufacturer with its main factory in Cortland.

My uncle, who had a milk processing and distribution operation in Pittsfield, Mass. years ago, ran a late thirties Brockway with a tanker body which made the run every morning to Chatham, NY to pick up the raw milk.

They were good and solid!

I'm sorry to disagree with you but Brockway never made anything other than chassis which were supplied to whomever wanted to build bodies on them (that included but was not limited to dump trucks, school buses, transit buses, tankers - you name it and Brockway had the right chassis for it!

Even their acquired line of 'Indiana' bus chassis required an outside contractor to build the bodies.

Here's a typical early forties heavy duty Brockway Chassis hauling body number 32 for Knapp Bus Services of Poughkeepsie, New York.

Take note of the small rectangular plate just below the fleet number to the right of the door which would be the body builder's identification.
