MetroExtra is a rush hour limited stop service (79 line) that was recently launched. It's operated by WMATA and funded by DDOT. I'm not sure why it was necessary to buy dedicated buses for a rush hour only serive, but the buses are pretty cool. They operate from Bladensburg division (one of 2 WMATA CNG facilities). The buses provide additional limited stop service along the busy Georgia Ave corridor from downtown DC (Archives, Pennsylvania Ave-7th Street) to Silver Spring Metro Station. In theory the 79 line is expected to provide a faster trip and ease crowding on the heavily-used 70/71 local bus lines that operate along the Georgia Ave/7th Street corridor.
