All:
Were the new NYCTA Fishbowls that replaced the Brooklyn trolley buses in 1960 purchased specifically for the conversion of the trolley bus routes to diesel coach, or, were they simply a part of the NYCTA's initial order of the new coaches?
Also, how many years did these "first generation" Fishbowls remain in service?
Thank you in advance for any and all ifo.....

Also......were any attempts ever made to preserve one of the old Brooklyn trolley buses?
Sure wish that Branford (now Shore Line) had been able to get at least one.... |

You're comment about Shoreline's trolley bus inventory is correct. However we have an old T-B #203 from, I believe PTC We recently acquired MBTA 4037, which is a Flyer and has passenger doors on both sides. |

Thank you for this info!
I was pretty sure that, sadly, none of the old Brooklyn trolley buses were preserved.
Branford (Shore Line) would have been an ideal choice, given its now-stunning collection of electric transit vehicles from the New York area.
Just imagine, if, like the MBTA trolley coaches in Cambridge, Brooklyn's had survived until the present day, even with newer equipment, and one or two of the old coaches kept for fan trips....

Thanks......that sounds about average.......still, the way those tanks were built.....properly maintained, I'm sure they could have kept on soldiering on for at least a while longer.
Hard to believe that it's now about 14 years since I've last ridden aboard a Fishbowl......I really miss 'em........

The 1960 NYCTA fishbowls (#501-805) were the second NYCTA fishbowl order. As far I remember, all were assigned to Brooklyn depots including some in the group that replaced the last Brooklyn Division trolley coaches on July 27, 1960. None were assigned when new to Manhattan, Queens, or Staten Island routes. The same day that the TCs were replaced there was a major restructuring of Brooklyn Bus Division garage assingments - West 5th Street Depot closed; and Fresh Pond (brand new) opened. |
