The 'Newark Independents' story along with Mack's participation can best be told in the May-June 1992 'Motor Coach Age' devoted almost exclusively to Newark by Murray S. Kramer.

However, to make a very long story as short as possible the Newark Independents started out in the mid teens as jitneys (wildcat operators) in Newark, New Jersey and on one particular route in neighboring Elizabeth (very much in the same fashion as the original Green Line drivers did in Manhattan).

These owner operators survived against attempts by the then Public Service Railway Company to take over all independent routes, and continued 'Parallel' or simultaneous services for more than sixty years until the then Public Service Coordinated sold out to the State of New Jersey which brought about the ultimate 'ratiionalization' of the Newark lines.

There was one basic difference between the stockholders of Green Line and those of Newark and that was the fact that the Newark buses were bought and owned by the individual drivers.

The listing below will include from left to right the permit number, fleet number (which, in some cases, will be the permit number), model number, serial number, owners name and year purchased (any additional remarks will be placed after the entry).
