When William T. Russel left his job at Brooklyn and Queens Transit Company in 1939 to take over the operation of St. Louis Public Service, he brought with him his undying love for the streamlined PCC trolley car that he had helped to pioneer with his former company.

In fact, St. Louis was about to receive their first 100 PCC's when Mr. Russel arrived and he promptly met with St. Louis Car Company designers and engineers to make certain that the order was to his unique specification.

His passion was carried forward with his first large order of buses in 1940 including eighty Yellow TG 3603's and twenty Mack CY-3G's that he had custom made to as closely resemble the PCC fleet as possible.

Pictured below in two factory poses is one of the twenty Mack CY-3G's delivered to St. Louis in October of 1940.

Of note, of course, is the windshield of extreme angle and the 'crank down' shallow passenger windows surrounded by bright stainless steel moldings reminiscent of the PCC coaches.

The wartime ridership on heavily traveled lines overwhelmed the little CY's and they were relegated to routes of less volume until eighteen were traded to Los Angeles Transit Lines after the conflict.

Photos thanks to the Mack Truck Museum and Motor Coach Age.
