My son and I had an opportunity on Saturday to visit the Centro operations in Utica and Rome. Centro received four new Gillig low-floor buses for Utica in 2009 to go with the two purchased in 2007. When we visited Utica last year both of the ’07 Gilligs were parked, but we found three of the 2009 buses in operation this time around. Here is 2906 leaving the ‘Busy Corner’ in downtown Utica on an outbound route 15 run:

Centro also recently took delivery of a new Orion VII bus for the Rome system. Orion’s plant is just up the road in Oriskany, so it would not have been politically acceptable to buy a Gillig for this operation (Centro used an available option from DART in Des Moines). The bus is numbered 1019 just above Centro’s new CNG Orions in Syracuse, and here it is arriving at the George Street terminal in downtown Rome on route 2, the busiest route on this small system:

Is it just me or has just about every small- to mid-sized transit agency in America been using 20xx to 29xx fleet numbers for their 2000 to 2009 coaches and switched to 10xx for their '010 arrivals?

And yes, I *do* find fleet numbering schemes mildly entertaining for some reason and I DO NOT KNOW WHY AND I CANNOT HELP IT.

Exceptions to this rule include the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority in the U.S. as well as various Canadian transit agencies including those in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and St. Catherines, all of which use various fleet numbers from 00** to 09**. Connecticut Transit used a similar year-based number series for their buses throughout the decade without the leading '0'.

Centro began using the last two digits of the year for the fleet numbers in 1997 when they renumbered their then-new NovaBus RTS's from 560-577 to 9760-9777. This changed with the delivery of a group of cutaways for paratransit service in 2002 that were numbered in the 2200-series, but five Orion V buses purchased in 2003 were spotted wearing 0300-series numbers at the Orion plant before being delivered as 2378-2382.
